UHS beats revenue estimate, stock falls 7.3% on guidance cut
Plus: American Industrial Partners closes $1.272B take-private of Avanos Medical. The day's rules, money, and enforcement, sourced and tiered below.
Earnings  Confidence: High
Universal Health Services, the hospital and behavioral health system operator, beat Wall Street's second quarter revenue estimate today, and investors sent the stock down 7.3 percent anyway.
Net revenue rose 8.3% to $4.638B, but UHS cut its full year adjusted profit guidance and free cash flow margin fell to 4.7% from 6.6%, citing a $72 million Florida Medicaid and reserve hit.
Why it matters
This is a snapshot of hospital industry health: a big operator's revenue beat masks weaker profit expectations and cash generation, a signal investors read as a warning about margins ahead.
Deal  Confidence: High
Avanos Medical, the maker of pain management, respiratory and feeding tube devices used from hospital to home, is off the New York Stock Exchange today after a private equity buyout closed.
American Industrial Partners paid $25.00 a share, about $1.272 billion all cash, closing the deal after 99.75% of votes cast backed it. Avanos had traded publicly for more than a decade.
Why it matters
A well known medical device maker used in hospitals and homes is now privately held, which can mean less public financial disclosure and different investment priorities going forward.
