The judge said the harm wasn't clearly CMS's fault. Requirements start January 1, 2027. Why it matters This keeps Medicaid work requirements on track to start January 1, 2027, so if you or someone you know is on Medicaid, watch for a notice by August 31, 2026 explaining how to comply or claim an exemption. The 2.4% rate hike comes with a catch: every nursing home must now report the same patient-assessment data CMS uses to compute quality scores, even for residents who aren't on Medicare. Why it matters Medicare is paying skilled nursing facilities more next year, but the tradeoff is that every nursing home, not just Medicare-billing ones, now has to report detailed patient data faster.
