ABA is a Medicaid/CHIP benefit for autism therapy. Spending went from about $2 billion in 2021 to $10 billion in 2025, a 400% jump, while diagnosed children served grew only 67% over the same span. Why it matters CMS wants states to tighten oversight of a Medicaid autism therapy benefit whose cost grew far faster than the number of children it serves; watch which states adopt prior authorization and hour caps first. Colorado's Comprehensive Safety Net Providers, the backbone of its community behavioral health system, moved to a bundled 9-service payment model July 1, on top of an April rate cut to 85% of Medicare levels.
