Genentech pays up to $2.3B for Hanmi's unproven obesity drug

Deal  Confidence: High
Genentech, the Roche-owned drugmaker behind cancer and immunology blockbusters, is paying up to $2.3 billion for an unproven obesity pill from Korea's Hanmi Pharmaceutical, betting it avoids GLP-1's muscle-loss problem.
Hanmi gets $190 million upfront now, with the rest tied to milestones. The drug, HM17321, targets a different biological pathway than Ozempic or Wegovy and is designed to preserve lean muscle while patients lose fat.
Why it matters
This is a record-setting bet on an obesity drug candidate that has not started Phase 2 testing; watch whether it can actually avoid the muscle-loss side effect drawing scrutiny to current GLP-1 drugs.

Deal  Confidence: High
Bon Secours Mercy Health, a large Catholic nonprofit hospital system, is buying Fauquier Health, a 97-bed Virginia hospital, from LifePoint Health, the for-profit chain majority owned by Apollo Global Management.
It's Bon Secours Mercy Health's 48th hospital, its fifth state. The deal, expected to close this fall, converts the hospital from for-profit to nonprofit; neither side disclosed a price.
Why it matters
This is another example of a financially stretched or non-core hospital moving from a private equity-backed chain to a larger nonprofit system; watch how the conversion affects local services and pricing.
