A sham procedure matched real catheter ablation on quality of life in a 262-patient trial of AFib, cardiology's most-performed heart-rhythm procedure. Ablation still cut recurrence sharply.
PVI-SHAM-AF (Lancet, ESC Congress) found AFEQT quality-of-life scores rose almost identically in both arms, not statistically different, despite ablation beating sham on AFib recurrence, 73% vs 52% free of AFib at 6 months.

This is the first sham-controlled trial to test whether AFib ablation's benefits go beyond keeping the heart rhythm steady, and it suggests some of what patients feel better from may be placebo. Watch whether the finding changes how doctors talk about the procedure, not whether it's still offered.

The American College of Cardiology, the specialty's largest physician group, wants CMS to raise cardiac PET/CT payment and drop a proposed site-neutral cut to office-based cardiac imaging.
ACC filed its comment letter on CMS's CY2027 hospital outpatient rule ahead of the August 31 deadline. The rule also proposes removing about 637 more procedures from Medicare's inpatient-only list; CMS finalizes in November.
