A Michigan hospital did everything the federal government's $50 billion rural health rescue program asked, converting into a smaller emergency-focused facility. It closed anyway three years later.

Sturgis Hospital, Michigan converted to Rural Emergency Hospital status in 2023 and closed in June 2026 anyway. Clifton-Fine Hospital in New York took the same deal and cut its losses from $2.5M to $600K.

The hospital system Henry Ford Health just shut down an entire hospital's emergency room and inpatient beds near Detroit, not over money or a funding fight, but because the building itself is failing.

River District Hospital in East China, Michigan closed its ER and inpatient care September 1. About 60 staff work there. The nearest Henry Ford emergency room is now 18 miles away.
