Record
The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, an insurer trade group covering about 1 in 3 Americans, says hospital AI coding tools added $942 million to what its plans paid from 2023 to 2025.
Secondary diagnoses drove $650M of the total, pushing 55,000+ stays into higher DRGs at ~$11,900 each. BCBSA's SVP: "AI is identifying more billable conditions, not sicker patients." More than 60% of hospitals use these tools.
Record
The managed care company Cigna announced a partnership with OpenAI to embed frontier reasoning AI directly in its oncology nurses' clinical workflows, a first for a major US health insurer.
Cigna and Accredo Specialty Pharmacy nurses and case managers get AI that unites clinical, pharmacy, behavioral health, and benefits data to support cancer patients between visits. Partnership announced September 25, 2026. No financial terms disclosed.
